Solaris Japan review: when the direct figure route makes sense

Solaris Japan makes the most sense when you want an anime figure that is already in its catalogue and you want one shop to take payment and ship from Japan. In that situation, a direct retailer avoids a marketplace seller, domestic postage to a proxy warehouse and a separate proxy fee.

The limit is equally important: it cannot unlock a Japan-only auction or private marketplace listing. Its published terms also make preorders and cancellations commitments, not flexible reservations. The practical verdict is to use Solaris Japan for stocked or clearly documented figure listings, and use a proxy only when domestic access is the thing you need.

Do not compare only the item price. Compare the checkout total against item + Japan-side delivery + proxy fee + international shipping on the proxy route. Import duty or tax at your destination can still apply to either route.

Shipping: what the official policy actually says

Solaris Japan's official shipping guidance says shipments are handled by Japan Post and shipping fees are calculated automatically. Some methods may be unavailable because of an item's size or weight.

Orders are usually processed within 72 hours, defined there as three business days from Monday to Friday. Weekends and Japanese national holidays are excluded. Choosing a faster shipping method does not shorten that handling period.

Displayed transit times are estimates and do not include customs delays. That distinction matters when ordering for a birthday or release event: handling, postal transit and customs clearance are separate clocks. Pre-owned figures: read stars and bonuses separately

Solaris Japan publishes a clear five-level condition scale:

• 5 stars: near mint, with little to no signs of use;
• 4 stars: very good, with minor signs of use;
• 3 stars: good, with some signs of use;
• 2 stars: average, with several signs of use or damage;
• 1 star: very used, with obvious signs of use or damage.

The same policy says pre-owned items come in box with accessories. It separately warns that preorder or initial-release bonuses are usually not included. That means a five-star figure can still lack a bonus postcard, face plate or shop-exclusive item that was never part of the standard contents.

Preorders are paid commitments

The official preorder guidance says preorders must be paid when placed; delayed or partial payments are not accepted. If available and preorder items share one order, shipment waits until every item is available.

Release dates, shipping weights and dimensions can change. Solaris Japan states that a difference from the manufacturer's estimate can produce an additional shipping charge when the item releases. This is especially relevant to large scale figures, where a larger box can change the international shipping bill.

Cancellation is the sharpest trade-off. The general cancellation policy says a placed order cannot normally be cancelled. If special circumstances are accepted, the stated restocking fee is 15% of the item value with a $10 minimum; shipped orders cannot be cancelled. A separate official preorder article states that cancellation up to seven days before release carries 10% with a $10 minimum, while later cancellation carries 15% with a $15 minimum. Manufacturer delays do not create a free-cancellation right.

Read those current terms before committing. A preorder is suitable when you are certain about the release and can tolerate a changed date; it is not a cost-free way to hold a place while deciding.

Problems, returns and the border

For a new item with a manufacturing problem, the published return policy asks the buyer to contact support within three days of receipt with a description and photographs. Solaris Japan says it can contact the manufacturer on the buyer's behalf, but does not guarantee manufacturer support, and the customer is responsible for international shipping connected with a replacement.

Solaris Japan is a strong starting point for an overseas buyer who:

• wants a figure already listed by a specialist Japanese retailer;
• values a direct checkout over a marketplace-plus-proxy chain;
• can judge pre-owned stock from the published grade and listing;
• accepts full preorder payment and firm cancellation terms; and
• will verify shipping and arrival charges before paying.

Use a proxy instead when the exact item, seller or bonus exists only inside Japan. The fee then buys access that a direct retailer cannot provide.
